José Pedro Salema has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of EDIA (Empresa de Desenvolvimento e Infraestruturas do Alqueva S.A.) since December 2013. He was the founder and manager of AGROGESTÃO, as well as a consultant for several companies and rural associations in Portugal and Angola. He has a degree in Agricultural Engineering from School of Agriculture – University of Lisbon (ISA/UL). He holds a Masters in Management and an MBA with a specialization in Information Management from Universidade Católica Portuguesa. He was an Assistant at the ISA/UL, monitored dozens of training actions and participated in the development of teaching materials.

Tailings Dam Safety – Challenges and Opportunities Lying Ahead for the Mining Industry

Dr. Caius Priscu is Co-Founder and Principal Geotechnical Engineer with Priscu and Associates Consulting Engineers Inc., based in West Vancouver, BC, Canada. He has over 30 years of experience in the field of geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering related to the mining and water resources industries across the world. He was involved in projects located in Canada, US, Australia, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Tunisia, Chile, Peru, Brazil, Slovenia, Spain, Mongolia, Philippines, and Romania. Dr. Priscu’s background is in both Civil and Mining Engineering, working over the years with a general contractor team, in consulting engineering, and as part of the Owner’s corporate team /operator of tailings and water retaining dams. Over the last two decades, his career focus has been on dam safety and risk management, and the development of corporate standards and guidance for safe design and operation of mine waste management facilities. He has presented in various events and published on these topics in over 50 occasions. Since January 2021, Dr. Priscu is also an Adjunct Professor at The University of British Columbia in the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering, where he enjoys mentoring students, sharing knowledge, and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Mine Waste Management and Safety of Tailings Storage Facilities. He is an avid volunteer and Corporate Member of the Canadian Dam Association (CDA), a past Member of ICOLD-Chile, and an Honorary Member of the Romanian National Committee on Large Dams (ROCOLD).

Graduated in civil engineering at the Politecnico di Milano in 1976, Guido Mazzà entered the ENEL Hydraulic and Structural Research Centre in 1978 where he became Head of the Structural Division since 1995.

In 2002 he joined CESI, a consultancy company in the electricity sector, as Head of the Safety Section of Civil Structures.

In 2010 he joined the public company Research on the Energy System - RSE S.p.A. as Head of the Networks and infrastructure Department. He later extended his responsibilities to Organization & Compliance.

The topics of interest were mainly related to the development of numerical tools, monitoring systems and in situ and laboratory investigations to support safety assessment, design and rehabilitation of civil works of power plants.

He has published over 50 articles in conferences, symposia and magazines.

He is currently Vice-President of ITCOLD, the Italian Committee on Large Dams, President of the ICOLD Technical Committee on "Computational Aspects of Dam Analysis and Design" and provides consultancy on the safety of dams and ancillary works.
